Shell buys Russian oil against promises

It would sever all ties with Russia and Putin, oil company Shell said last week. But on Saturday, The Wall Street Journal revealed that that was not really true: Shell bought 100,000 tons of Russian oil against its own promises. It was reportedly “a godsend”.

Many companies have already announced that they no longer want to do business in and with Russia for the time being. In addition to many retailers, Shell also planned to ignore Russian oil for a while. At least, that’s what the company said. Because in reality they bought 100,000 tons of Russian oil this week. A great opportunity, because Shell paid 28.5 dollars – about 26 euros – per barrel.

Shell immediately received a storm of criticism. “Doesn’t the Russian oil smell of Ukrainian blood?” a foreign minister wondered. The company responded on Saturday that it would use the profits from the oil for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
