Shell Energy Company has announced the appointment of Wael Sawan as Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2023, to succeed Ben van Beurden, who will step down later this year.
According to a statement released by the company on Thursday, Van Beurden will continue serving as an advisor to the Board of Directors until June 30, 2023, after which he will leave the group permanently.
According to Reuters, Dutchman Van Beurden joined Shell in 1983 and became its CEO in January 2014.
Sawan was among the personalities nominated for the position, according to a Reuters article published earlier this month.
The selection of Sawan, who is currently the director of integrated gas and renewable energy operations in the company, comes at a time when energy companies are looking to diversify their businesses to reduce carbon emissions and support efforts to address the climate change.
Sawan stressed that he is looking forward to seizing the opportunities offered by the energy transition: “We will be disciplined and focused on creating value as we work with our customers and partners to provide the world’s needs with cleaner, more reliable and reasonably priced energy. “He said.
