Mexico City. The basis of economic development in the government of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo will be in the semiconductor industry, a sector that Mexico seeks to promote with the operation of the Wellbeing Poles, said Othón Valverde Yáñez, Undersecretary of Industry and Commerce of the Ministry of Economy (SE).
Participating in the “Americas Alliance Symposium on Semiconductors: Expanding the Supplier Ecosystem,” the official noted that the current federal administration concluded that it is necessary to boost this sector through an assembly, testing and packaging chain, but also to attract the rest of the microchip manufacturing ecosystem.
“Based on the economic program of the next administration, of the next president of Mexico, it is defined that the basis for economic development will be in five strategic sectors,” said Valverde Yáñez.
“One of them is semiconductors, another is the electronics industry, cars based on electric vehicles, medical devices and agribusiness,” he said.
He commented that although Mexico is the leading exporter of personal computers, the fourth of light vehicles and the fifth of household appliances, it is also an importer of components manufactured in Asia in particular, which are then exported in final products to global markets.
He stressed that the incentives given to the industry must change so that value chains can grow with greater national content, attract companies to Mexico and promote relocation.
The undersecretary indicated that as part of the policy in the secondary sector, the government seeks that the clusters industrial hubs called Wellbeing Hubs are an anchor to attract companies from the rest of the semiconductor ecosystem.
“An assembly, testing and packaging company will serve as an anchor in this clustering model, thus continuing to grow along the value chain and also within the ecosystem,” he said.
He noted that the North American region is facing an investment opportunity, because although the United States has announced the injection of 2.3 billion dollars into this industry, Mexico can be part of the development of the value chain, which requires capital to have factories for components, substrates, tools and machines, which are currently only available in Asia.
She stressed that although the country’s infrastructure for energy, water and other services is insufficient, this problem will be resolved under Sheinbaum Pardo’s government.
The Undersecretary of Industry and Commerce guaranteed that Mexico will have a secure framework for the development of the semiconductor industry in the coming months and years, which includes having a trained workforce and the modernization of sectoral programs to provide administrative facilities.
