Mexico City. The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, said Thursday that the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the first female president of Mexico marks “a milestone for North America and for building more inclusive and equitable societies around the world.”
In a message posted by the diplomat on his social media to congratulate the people of Mexico for the elections – after Sheinbaum received her certificate as president-elect today – Ken Salazar also offered the collaboration of the United States with the next government administration in this country, emphasizing respect for the sovereignty of both nations.
“I wish him success in his administration, as well as those he has appointed to his cabinet. We reaffirm our commitment to continue working with Mexico as partners and with respect for our respective sovereignties to advance the prosperity, well-being and security of our nations,” he said.
He described it as a “historic event” that reaffirms the importance of the democratic values that the United States and Mexico share.
“I acknowledge the National Electoral Institute (INE), through its president, Guadalupe Taddei, and the citizens who participated in this process, as well as the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation and its president, Judge Monica Soto,” he concluded.
