The official presidential candidate, Claudia Sheinbaumsupported this Thursday Mexico’s lawsuit against Ecuador in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, a fact that it described as “despicable”which violates Mexican sovereignty, and breaks all international treaties.

“What happened in the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, it is completely reprehensible, it violates all international protocols and is a violation of Mexico’s sovereignty, it has no other name,” Sheinbaum said at a press conference in Mexicalí, Baja California, the first stop on his tour of the northwest of the country.

“We saw despicable scenes that occurred at the embassy and here we also took the opportunity to congratulate our diplomatic corps who acted with enormous courage,” he added.

Mexico broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador after the violent assault that took place last Friday at the Mexican Embassy in the South American country, in which diplomatic staff were mistreated and the former Ecuadorian vice president was detained. Jorge Glaswho had requested political asylum.

Before the granting of asylum by Mexico, Glas was subject to a preventive detention order from a competent judge, and two enforceable sentences for which he was on supervised release. The 1954 Caracas Political Asylum Convention prohibits asylum from being granted in these circumstances.

This Thursday, in her complaint before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena demanded “the suspension of Ecuador as a member of the UN until a public apology is issued, recognizing the violations of fundamental principles and norms.” of international law.”

Sheinbaum recalled that President López Obrador compared the action of the Ecuadorian Government’s assault on the Mexican Embassy, ​​with the betrayal of President Antonio López de Santa Anna, which led to the sale of half of the national territory to the United States, a fact historic event that occurred in 1853.

Regarding the relationship with the United States and the issue of migration, Sheinbaum, leading in the surveys, stressed that the underlying solution to the problem of migration is international cooperation for the development of the countries of Central and South America.

“Regardless of whether President Joe Biden wins or Donald Trump returns to the presidency of the United States, we are going to continue insisting, and it has to be understood, it is not putting up walls, it is not preventing migration, but rather that there are work visas and particularly investment and support for countries from which people are expelled, not out of pleasure, but mainly out of necessity,” he explained.

In addition, he promised that if he wins the presidential elections on June 2, in which he supports the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Labor (PT) and Green Ecologist of Mexico (PVEM) parties, there will be better treatment and support to migrants as they pass through Mexican territory, in addition to offering them conditions so that they can stay and live with their families.

Mexico will hold the largest elections in its history on June 2, when more than 97 million people are called to renew 20,375 federal positions, including the Presidency of the Republic, the 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and the 128 of the Senate, as well as nine state governments. EFE
