Sheinbaum supports AMLO’s decision on diplomatic pause with the US and Canada

Mexico City. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo supported President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s decision to pause relations with the ambassadors of the United States and Canada in Mexico, in light of “the offense they committed” and considered that “this does not change relations” with both governments. Dialogue continues.

He said that ambassadors must respect that there are issues that are only for Mexicans, and he specified that it will depend on what happens in the following weeks to decide on the pause with the diplomats, once he takes office.

He said that for now, he has no plans to meet with the U.S. ambassador, Ken Salazar.

“We had a meeting when legislators (from that country) came and another, when the person in charge of President (Joe) Biden’s security issues came.”

He insisted that “there is a very good relationship with the United States and Canada, we are commercial partners, there is dialogue, but there are issues that are exclusively up to Mexicans to decide, such as the case of the transformation of the Judiciary”:

Therefore, he said, the constitutional president “has his reasons for making this decision and it will be up to us to decide starting October 1, when we take office.”

Of course, “we will always support the President of the Republic and that does not mean that relations with the United States and Canada will change, but it is important that the ambassadors of these countries and others (recognize) that there are issues that correspond exclusively to Mexicans, just as we are also respectful of what corresponds exclusively to the American people and the Canadian people.

In response to a direct question, he said that he does not plan to request the withdrawal of the United States ambassador.

“Nobody is planning, I am not planning on my part.”

-Will you maintain your decision to pause your relationship with the ambassador?

-Let’s see what happens this week, we don’t have to get ahead of ourselves.

“The important thing is that there was a position on the part of the ambassadors of the United States and Canada and our role as the Executive Branch and also of the legislators is to defend our sovereignty. What happens is that these statements, the ambassador spoke of the US government, are not isolated statements.

The chancellor also supports AMLO’s position

Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena expressed her support on Tuesday for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s decision to pause relations with the embassies of the United States and Canada.

“Decisions about Mexico are made by Mexicans,” said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) on the X platform. “We support President @lopezobrador_ for interventionist comments from the embassies of the United States and Canada.”

“Our relationship with our friends and neighbors in North America is a priority and fundamental, and on a daily basis it remains fluid and normal,” the official said.
