Sheinbaum signs decree to guarantee Mexican rights in the Constitution

Mexico City. “Women are already in the Constitution, our rights are guaranteed,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo this Friday, who signed the decree reforming seven constitutional articles to guarantee the substantive equality of Mexican women, the gender perspective, the right of women to a life free of violence and eradication of the gender pay gap.

This is a decree that will be published today after Congress reformed seven constitutional articles, the president explained in her daily press conference at the National Palace.

Citlali Hernández, head of the Women’s Secretariat, explained that articles 4, 21, 41, 73, 116, 122 and 123 of the Constitution were modified to guarantee “equal access to rights and opportunities for all women, in the right to live a life free of violence.”

He added that the reforms establish the gender perspective, both in matters of public security and for judges, and empower the federal government to grant protection measures for women who are victims of crimes under common law.

It also establishes the obligation to establish specialized prosecutor’s offices in crimes of violence against women and expands parity in all levels of public administration.

In addition, the eradication of the wage gap is established.

“These reforms are historic, they are an advance that is enshrined in the Constitution, an example of regional and global vanguard, of course, that establishes and strengthens this commitment that the government of Mexico has with women,” said the official.

Morena senator Martha Lucía Mícher maintained that the completion of these reforms is “a historical desire come true” and highlighted that they must now be integrated into secondary laws. “We thank our feminist leader of this country from our feminist hearts,” said the legislator when referring to Sheinbaum.

Representative Anaís Miriam Burgos Hernández asserted that with the new laws “girls will be guaranteed a different future.”

Sheinbuam pointed out that in addition to these changes, his government is working on the construction of a National Care System to help ensure that care tasks do not fall on women, as, he stated, has happened historically.

“The State must provide the conditions so that women can dedicate themselves to other tasks, if they wish, and that they can leave their children in a place where they are well cared for or a sick person and that care does not fall on the woman.”
