Mexico City, The government of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo will build one million new homes throughout the six-year term to counteract the housing gap faced especially in the north and south of the country.
The federal president indicated that the objective is to build low-cost housing so that Mexican families, particularly young people, have access to housing. The price, he added, will range between 700 thousand and one million 200 thousand pesos.
The head of the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu), Edna Vega, reported this Monday morning that half of these homes will be built by Infonavit – for beneficiaries – and the other half by the National Commission of Housing (Conavi)—for non-beneficiaries.
Before the federal president, Secretary Vega explained that there will also be a program to improve and expand 450 thousand homes in the country, especially in areas with greater economic lags and vulnerability rates.
For this, he said, it is estimated that an investment of 600 billion pesos will be allocated.
Additionally, the federal government intends to regularize one million more homes with deeds.
Vega indicated that of the new homes, 350,000 will be built in the south-southeast, 239,400 in the central area, 228,800 in the north-central region, and 206,800 in the north.
With this, he added, 6 million direct jobs and 9 million indirect jobs will be generated.
The goal for 2025, it is estimated that 165 thousand new homes will be ready, plus 100 thousand improvements in the eastern part of the state of Mexico and 120 thousand deeds will be regularized.
For his part, Octavio Romero, director of Infonavit, indicated that by the end of 2024 the institute plans to grant 340 thousand credits to IMSS beneficiaries for the acquisition of new and existing housing, and 14 thousand for construction on their own land; as well as 224 thousand for remodeling or repair.
In the six years of Sheinbaum Pardo’s six-year term, the official commented, it is estimated that the institute will build 500,000 new social housing units, for which an investment of 288 billion pesos will be allocated.
In addition, 250 thousand credits will be granted for improvement, with an estimated investment of 20 billion pesos; as well as one million credits to repair or expand housing from the ordinary program.
Special mention, he said, corresponds to an instruction from the president to create a construction company to reduce costs and have housing capacity.
“Not only the 500 thousand from Infonavit will be included, but the total of one million, 500 thousand for Conavi and for Fovissste,” Romero commented.
Additionally, the institute will operate a rental housing program with an option to own. Especially intended for heads of families, young people and older adults.
Rodrigo Chávez Contreras, general director of Conavi, indicated that this body will build 500,000 more homes, for non-entitled beneficiaries, with an investment of 285 billion pesos.
An improvement program will also be carried out for 300 thousand homes with 15 billion pesos.
