Sheinbaum presents initiative for reforms in support and protection of women

Mexico City. This morning the federal government presented a series of reform initiatives to the Constitution and secondary laws to guarantee support and protection for women, as well as substantive equality for that sector and the reduction of the wage gap.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo indicated that these proposals will be sent to the Senate of the Republic, which will be the chamber of origin, so that Congress can analyze and, where appropriate, approve this series of reforms, which also include gender parity in the federal and state public administration.

The initiatives propose modifications to articles 4, 21, 41, 73, 116 and 123 of the Magna Carta, and seven secondary regulations (the general laws for Equality between men and women, the National Public Security System, Access to Women to a Life Free of Violence, the national codes of Criminal Procedures and Civil and Family Procedures, and the federal laws of Labor and Workers in the service of the State).

“As the first President of Mexico, our obligation is to protect women and that three elements are established in the Constitution of the Republic,” explained the federal president during her second morning of the recently begun six-year term.

A relevant point, he emphasized, is the establishment at the constitutional level of substantive equality, which goes beyond the equality of women and men before the law, since this guarantee extends so that all laws in the country consider the particularities of women and their human rights.

“We want substantive equality to remain in the Constitution, in article 4.”

The initiatives, he added, also seek to guarantee in the country the right to a life free of violence for women, adolescents, girls and boys; also that there are no salary gaps between men and women, “equal work, equal pay,” he stressed.

The head of the Executive added that the reforms also establish regulations so that public security and justice institutions adjust their actions to the gender perspective, with modifications to articles 21 and 116 of the Constitution.

Likewise, it is sought that the investigative prosecutor’s offices have specialized areas in gender-based crimes.

Article 41 will establish the mandatory nature of gender parity in the federal and state public administration. “That there are joint cabinets will be established in the Constitution.”

The president also reported that a specialized team made up of women will work on the preparation of the Women’s Rights Booklet, so that next year this document will be delivered especially to that sector, but also to men, so that Citizens know the rights of women and where to go or what actions to take in the event of their violation.

All the women who make up her cabinet accompanied her.
