Mexico City. After speaking on Monday with the relatives of the Ayotzinapa students who disappeared in 2014, the virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, explained that she proposed that the following meetings also be with the parents of the students themselves and not only with their lawyers. She left open the possibility of a new approach after the new meeting scheduled with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
He said that the investigations will continue to be led by the Ministry of the Interior and the Undersecretary of Human Rights of that agency, together with the Attorney General’s Office.
He also said that the versions about the alleged responsibility of members of the Army are partly based on the versions of a “fiction book,” and pointed out that he clarified to the parents of the students that at this time he only has the information that is public about the case.
In a press conference at her transition house, Sheinbaum Pardo referred to the meeting she held yesterday at the City Museum, moments after the relatives of the 43 normalistas attended a meeting with President López Obrador at the National Palace.
He revealed that the parents “proposed to meet with the lawyers, (but) I told them that I preferred to continue meeting with them, with the fathers and mothers, because it is always different to meet directly with the victims than just with the lawyers.”
He also reiterated that the first thing he suggested to them was “not to abandon the case, not to close it, to continue working with them to find what they have always asked for, which is the truth, justice and to find the young people.”
He stressed that there have been important advances, including the former prosecutor Jesús Murillo Karam, who took responsibility for the so-called historical truth, as well as former police officers and militants, as well as others who were released for cases of torture. “It is a complex issue but we are not going to abandon it, we are going to continue working with them.”
Recalling that they have another meeting scheduled with President López Obrador in August, she added that “we will see if we meet again. What I told them is that the information I have is public information, I do not have more information because at this moment I am just another citizen who does not have access to more information… it will be different when I assume the role of Constitutional President.”
Meanwhile, he said that within the framework of the investigations, a debate has been raised “on the Army’s participation and where the Army’s participation came from and what evidence there is. We have heard the president, I think he said it in the morning press conference on Friday last week, he even explained the role of the judge in the United States, how this was based on a fictional book by Anabel Hernández that has no evidence, just like the second book she published before the election, because there is no evidence other than an alleged informant.”
In light of this, he told them to recover the goals of reaching “the truth, what happened, and what is the evidence of what happened that night based on what the witnesses have said, what the first detainees said, those detained later, and other evidence that exists.
He insisted that, at the same time, justice must be sought and where they are found out, an issue that, he acknowledged, “is very painful for the families.” “Clearly, much progress has been made; there are also contradictions in some versions,” he added.
He stressed that a working method will be defined at the appropriate time to continue with the investigations.
