Mexico City. Former President Ernesto Zedillo stated this Friday that President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo “has redoubled her support for AMLO’s antidemocratic plan” and that “she appears committed to following her predecessor’s goal of reverting Mexico to a one-party autocracy.”
In an article published in the American newspaper The Washington PostZedillo criticizes Sheinbaum Pardo’s support for the judicial reform promoted by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and accuses her of thereby fueling a “constitutional crisis.”
Zedillo argued that these reforms are designed to centralize power, weaken Mexican democratic institutions, particularly the Judiciary and electoral bodies, and to move toward a one-party regime.
He added that the changes promoted by AMLO give a greater role to the armed forces in the civil administration, which according to him can turn them “into a key actor in maintaining an authoritarian and corrupt system.”
“Unfortunately, Sheinbaum has redoubled his support for AMLO’s antidemocratic plan, even emulating his tactics of slandering, insulting and threatening both the Judiciary as an institution and individual judges, as well as others who have criticized the amendments. He is also advocating that the government ignore judicial rulings,” said Zedillo.
“Instead, he should use his mandate to stop the democratic regression orchestrated by AMLO – whatever his ultimate motive – and initiate a genuine and comprehensive process of reforms to achieve true rule of law and citizen security in Mexico,” added the former president.
With this, he wrote, Sheinbaum “could greatly improve the poor performance of his predecessor. He must decide between honoring his loyalty to AMLO or the will of the Mexican people to live in democracy.”
He asserted that the pride that Mexico has its first female president should be moderated, as he said that she is determined to turn the country into “a single-party autocracy, reminiscent of much of the 20th century, when competitive and fair elections and Power were lacking. Judicial was not independent.”
