The president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumdenied on Thursday that the country is approaching a dictatorship in the face of the ‘supermajority’ in Congress, where it will be able to modify the Constitution without the opposition, and the reform to elect by popular vote the Judiciary.

“It is false (that a dictatorship is coming). Who has always fought for democracy? Us. We fight against electoral fraud, we fight for Mexico to be a democratic country.”the future president responded to a direct question from the press outside her transition house.

His statement comes after the Electoral Court on Wednesday endorsed the agreement of the National Electoral Institute (INE) on the allocation of federal deputies by proportional representation, with which the ruling party alliance exceeds the two-thirds of Congress, necessary to reform the Constitution.

In addition to Sheinbaum’s presidential victory, the ruler National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and its allied parties won 364 seats out of a total of 500 on June 2, while in the Senate they won 83 out of a total of 128, although two opposition senators switched to the government on Wednesday.

With these ‘supermajorities’, starting on September 1, legislators will vote on the controversial constitutional reforms of the current president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorsuch as the one that will establish popular elections in the Judiciary.

«Now there is a recognition of the people of Mexico who want more democracy. It is democracy, democracy, democracy, but a true democracy and a true rule of law»commented Sheinbaum, who takes office on October 1.

The judicial reform raises alarms among the opposition, judges, organizations such as the UN, financial institutions, companies and governments of USA y Canada due to various fears, such as the end of the separation of powers, lack of certainty for investors and the possible interference of drug trafficking in the elections.

But, when asked if there is a way to further delay the discussions on judicial reform and hold more dialogues, Sheinbaum insisted that “it is the will of the people of Mexico, that is what is important.”

Given the unusual mobilization of students from Law from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)who tend to mobilize for left-wing causes, recommended that they “read the proposal carefully.”

He also said that “there will be no more protests” when the vote on the reform begins next week.

“There is recognition from the people of Mexico. What our legislators are deciding is what the people want.”he stressed. EFE (I)
