Sheinbaum and AMLO inaugurate the Living Museum of Muralism

Mexico City. In the past, a change of government was experienced as a “breakup.” “Who knows why,” said President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum with a smile. The occasion was the inauguration of what will become the Living Museum of Muralism, in the historic building of the Secretariat of Public Education.

The president-elect and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador exchanged compliments and reiterated their idea of a smooth transition.

In the first courtyard of the SEP, that is, surrounded by Diego Rivera’s murals, Sheinbaum connected the history captured on the walls with the people as the “architects” of their present and their future, with the 4T and with the achievements of the current government to reach the critical point: the exclusion of Felipe VI, King of Spain, from the list of guests to his inauguration.

To get to that point, he spoke about the achievements of this six-year term and said that, in addition to those listed by the president in his last report, the 4T has managed to “restore dignity to the people of Mexico and to our country. And that is unique, we see it throughout Mexico, the pride that is felt in being part of this transformation and in being Mexican men and women.”

He then explained: “And I bring this up precisely because of the letter I published today on my social media. When the Spanish Crown refuses not only to forgive, which makes people great, it does not shame them but it makes them great, and in addition there is no official response to the President of the Republic, not only Andrés Manuel López Obrador, but to the President, representative of the people of Mexico, of the nation, because evidently it is not only an insult to the President, to the man, but to the people of Mexico.”

While Mexican neoliberals were ashamed of national history, the president continued, “we are quite the opposite, we feel proud of the indigenous peoples, we feel proud of having approved the constitutional reform so that the indigenous peoples have full rights.”

This is how he came to the end of his brief speech, with cheers for indigenous peoples, the 4T and the president, which was heard amid applause.

The first two floors of the historic headquarters of the Ministry of Public Education are being converted into the Living Museum of Muralism, which will have different rooms in what were once offices.

The attendees, mostly officials from the SEP and the Ministry of Culture, ended with the now classic cry of “it is an honor to be with Obrador!”
