Shein: Cases of child exploitation confirmed at suppliers

Chinese online shopping giant Shein has admitted to discovering two cases of child labor among its suppliers in the past year, a source has revealed. rapport of the company obtained by the BBC.

The company had temporarily suspended orders from these suppliers until they resolved the problem.

The management reportedly took some measures to resolve the situation, such as terminating contracts with employees under the age of 18 and paying several unpaid salaries. It also arranged medical examinations and contacted the parents or legal guardians of the minors involved.

Shein said it has tightened the screws on several standards regarding suppliers. If any of them forces a child to work in its factory, the company would immediately terminate its contract with them, according to the report.

Both cases were reportedly observed during the first nine months of 2023, Shein said. Neither was reported in the last quarter of the year.

The company has already gotten into trouble several times in the past for conditions it allegedly imposes on its employees.
