Sheikh Nawaf, Crown Prince of Kuwait, Declared Successor and Emir – Political Crisis and Power Dynamics in Kuwait’s ruling dynasty

Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has been declared his successor.

The cause of Nawaf’s death has not been released. However, it is known that the sheikh was undergoing treatment since the end of November.

Nawaf became the Emir of Kuwait in the fall of 2020, replacing his half-brother, who died at the age of 91.

During the reign of Sheikh Nawaf, the country experienced several political crises and the government of Kuwait changed several times.

Although Kuwait’s parliament has a larger legislative role than in other Gulf states, supreme power remains in the hands of the ruling dynasty.

Kuwait was the first Gulf state to introduce an elected parliament in 1963.

Born in 1937, Nawaf started his political career at the age of less than 30, when he became the governor of Havali province.

He has held positions in the government several times, including the Minister of Internal Affairs, Defense and Social Affairs.
