Sheep pox has entered Yambolsko-Agro Plovdiv – 2024-09-04 15:37:14


The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) found an outbreak of small ruminant pox in the village of Voinika, commune. Straldza, Yambolsko. The disease was detected in a livestock facility with 135 sheep. Until now, the agency had not reported an established infection in our country, although hundreds of thousands of sick animals have already been destroyed in Greece and Romania.

A report of sick animals was received on September 2 at the regional food safety directorate. The official veterinarian immediately took samples for laboratory analysis and from the same date the site was placed under embargo to restrict movement to and from it. The samples were examined in the Testing Laboratory “Exotic and Particularly Dangerous Infections” at NDNIVMI, city of Sofia. The analysis confirmed the presence of small ruminant pox.

A 3-kilometer safety zone has been defined around the outbreak, which includes the village of Voinika, commune. Straldzha, region Yambol.

A 10-kilometer monitoring zone has been defined around the outbreak, which includes the villages of Nedyalsko, Bogorovo, Parvenets, Lyulin, Pravdino, Alexandrovo, Polyana, Kamenets, Saransko, Tamarino and Leyarovo, municipality. Straldzha, region Yambol; in general Sredets, region Burgas – Zornitsa village.

The herd will be liquidated, and the municipal and regional epizootic commissions in Yambol and Burgas will conduct an investigation.

The animal breeder is subject to compensation for the losses suffered, according to the Veterinary Medical Activity Act (VMA).
