A sheep that had been living alone on a cliff in England for two years was rescued by nearby farmers.
According to the British Guardian and BBC on the 5th (local time), a sheep named ‘Fiona’ was rescued from a 250m high cliff in the Cromarty Firth Strait in northern Scotland the day before.
Fiona has been living isolated on a cliff for at least two years. Gillian Turner, who first discovered Fiona while enjoying kayaking in the sea at the time, is said to have judged that Fiona had climbed the cliff on her own initiative and passed on without taking any action. However, when he visited the location again the following year, he saw Fiona still there and was convinced that she was isolated.
Since then, Fiona’s story has spread online, and voices calling for her rescue have gathered through an online petition. Fiona was called ‘Britain’s loneliest sheep’ and was reported in major local media such as the Guardian and BBC. However, there is still no information about the route Fiona took to climb the 250m high cliff.

Turner said, “I wasn’t worried at first because I thought the sheep could roam anywhere, but when I went back to the same place and saw that they were alone, I started to worry.” Afterwards, he reportedly contacted the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) and mountain rescue services, but none of them took any active action.
“Mountain rescue was sympathetic but told us to contact the police or fire brigade, and the SSPCA said Fiona was not in any particular danger,” Turner said. “The sheep was jumping from the top of the cliff and seemed desperate to get our help. “It was of no use,” he recalled.
In the end, it was five nearby farmers who heard Fiona’s story and came to the rescue. After mobilizing heavy equipment, they safely pulled Fiona out and took her to the livestock farm they operated.
Currently, Fiona is said to be growing healthily in a barn. The livestock farm said they were planning to transport Fiona to Dalscone Farm in Dumfries and raise her with other sheep, adding, “We will make sure Fiona stays warm this winter.”
