She-wolf killed on a provincial road near Ede: ‘Black day for the Veluwe’ | Inland

The she-wolf was hit at around 11 a.m. when the animal crossed the road. The motorist warned a forester from Natuurmonumenten and a wildlife manager from the municipality of Ede. They determined that the wolf was in good condition. The dead wolf has been temporarily taken to an office of Natuurmonumenten near Ede, but will be transferred to the Dutch Wildlife Health Center of Utrecht University. There the autopsy and further veterinary examination is done.

According to forester and wolf expert Frank Theunissen of Natuurmonumenten, the collision may have heralded the end of the wolf in the Veluwe. “This is a huge blow to the game population in the Veluwe. This wolf was pregnant, she had already dug some holes for her future young. We have seen this with our own eyes. Now everything is destroyed in one fell swoop. No natural growth, the male wolf who also resides here, has nothing more to look for. He will leave for elsewhere ”, he tells de Gelderlander.

It is not the first time that a wolf has been killed in the Veluwe. Exactly a year ago, a motorist ran into a young wolf from the first wolf nest in the North Veluwe. The injured animal still fled into the forest, but was found dead in the vicinity of the collision a short time later.
