She-wolf driven to death in Gelderland, identity still unclear

A she-wolf was killed by a woman near Ede on Saturday. The province of Gelderland has that announced. By committing autopsy it should become clear which of an estimated twelve Dutch wolves are involved. It may have been one of the few adult wolves living in the Netherlands.

According to the province, the knocked-down she-wolf was in ‘good condition’ and she may have been the animal that had been living around the Zuid-Veluwe for some time. Most of the wolves in the Netherlands are young. One of them, a young wolf from the first native Dutch wolf nest, became Driven to death a year ago.

The return of the wolf to the Netherlands a few years ago has led to fierce debate. Some sheep farmers prefer to see the predator leave because it attacks their livestock. Nature enthusiasts and ecologists are delighted with the beast, which did not live in the Netherlands for about 150 years. Wolves are considered the crowning glory of conservationists because they would show that Dutch nature is again sufficiently enriched for an animal that needs a large living environment.
