Doctors were shocked to discover that a woman suffering from back pain had a deadly parasite in her spine.
The story began when the 46-year-old Chinese girl went to the hospital with pain that began in her lower back and spread to her thigh and lower leg.
The woman, who was not named, told doctors that the pain had gradually worsened 3 years ago.
Scans conducted at the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing revealed a cyst growing on the woman’s spinal cord.
Doctors discovered that it was full of a deadly parasite called Taenia solium, according to the British newspaper, The Sun.
When tapeworms are found in the central nervous system in the brain or spinal cord, this is known as neurocysticercosis.
When it is on the spinal cord, this is called spinal cysticercosis, and it is a rare but fatal condition if not treated.
Studies show that up to 7% of people with the infection suffer a stroke.
The doctors reported in the Journal of Medical Case Reports that the parasite had moved to the spinal cord through vessels connected to the spine.
They explained that cysticercosis of the spine is believed to be relatively rare, as it has not been reported before.
After removing the cyst, the woman was treated with deworming medication, and doctors said that 3 years after the surgery, her back pain had decreased.
What are the symptoms of neurocysticercosis?
Symptoms of neurocysticercosis vary depending on where the lesions form, the extent of the infection, and the person’s immune response. Common signs and symptoms include:
seizures.
Chronic headache.
Increased pressure in the brain.
Neurological problems affecting the function of the spinal cord, brain, or nerves.
Decreased ability to think and remember.
