On December 3, the fifth part of Historien om Sverige, SVT’s biggest history effort ever, will be broadcast. In the episode, Marie Schmidt at the Lödöse Museum talks about how the children were in the Middle Ages.

When SVT started their major initiative “Historien om Sverige” they contacted museums all over Sweden. Marie Schmidt has been an archaeologist and museum educator at Lödöse Museum for over 20 years, and had lots of ideas about what she could contribute.

Until 1473, Lödöse was the only Swedish gateway to the North Sea and had an important role as a trading and port city.

– The Middle Ages are extra everything! We built contact networks all over the known world, there were cultural meetings, which is reflected in food, fashion and music, among other things. There are so many cool stories! But here my main task was to talk about how the children were doing, says Marie Schmidt.

And of course children played, even in the Middle Ages. Among the archaeological finds on display are balls, skates made from animal bones, and toy swords.

– The balls are wooden balls that may have been used, among other things, for skittles. We have also found a toy axe, a wooden spinning top and a small child’s shoe.

Have you gotten a sneak peek at the episode you’re in?

– No! And it will feel scary! I’ll ask my twin sister to watch first, and tell her how it was. Then I look! At the same time, of course, it’s great fun, I feel an immense pride in being involved in telling Sweden’s history.

For those who want to meet Marie and hear her tell everything that didn’t make it into the SVT episode, Lödöse Museum invites you to a soup lunch on December 5. Read more on the Lödöse museum’s website.
