Stowaway on Delta Flight Creates International Incident
A bizarre turn of events on a recent flight from New York to Paris has resulted in an international standoff. A 57-year-old Russian woman, identified as Svetlana D., managed to bypass security at JFK International Airport and hide on a Delta Air Lines flight before being discovered mid-air.
Details of D.’s daring feat are still emerging, but authorities confirm she somehow evaded two identity checkpoints and boarding procedures, disappearing into a lavatory for the majority of the flight until her presence raised suspicions among the crew.
Upon landing in Paris, D. was apprehended by French border police. Her return to the United States was scheduled for November 30th, but an attempted extradition was met with strong resistance from the stowaway.
“She refused to board when an American police officer tried to handcuff her,” reported French news agency Le Parisien. “She started ‘screaming, reciting the ‘Parisian,’” they added, referencing a potentially rambling and incoherent recitation.
Adding another layer of intrigue, D. claimed to American liaison officers that she had been poisoned with polonium by Russian intelligence, alleging collaboration with American authorities. Medical examinations, however, found no evidence to support her claims.
The case has now entered a legal limbo. D., who holds a valid green card allowing her residency in the United States, has an expired Russian passport. The circumstances surrounding her evasion of security protocols and her subsequent behavior have left authorities grappling with questions of motive and potential national security implications.
As D. remains in French custody, it remains unclear when – or if – she will be extradited back to the United States. The incident has sparked discussion about airport security procedures and highlighted the complexities of international extradition.
