Opportunities to rejoice are sometimes rare in the province’s long-term care centers (CHSLDs), but on Monday, Maria Lacasse celebrated her 110th birthday surrounded by the love of her loved ones, and the party was the appointment.
Maria was born in Chertsey, in Lanaudière, on December 4, 1913, even before the First World War broke out.
Despite her impressive age, Maria has lost none of her lucidity.
To celebrate her birthday, the centenarian was accompanied by residents of her floor, staff members, as well as relatives.
She has lived at the CHSLD in Saint-Michel since she was 108 years old, where she has earned the appreciation of the beneficiary attendants who provide her care.
“We spend more time here, almost, than at home with our own family… Even if our work is hard, when we arrive in Madame Lacasse’s room, she is always smiling, she always wants to help us, she never wants to bother us. It’s a pleasure to work with her,” explained beneficiary attendant Caroline Chabot.
“If they could all be like her, that would be wow,” she added with a laugh.
Maria ironically claims that the secret to her longevity, however, lies in her bad temper. Questioned on this subject, she actually claims that to live a long time, you have to be “uncomfortable”.
The dean of the CHSLD of Saint-Michel does not intend to give up her place anytime soon; she assures that she will blow out the candles, not only on her 111th birthday, but also on her 112th.
