She Came in the Night is one of the biggest surprises of this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival. It shows us that the biggest monsters may be closer than we think.
I am looking forward to my parents’ visit. But over the years we agreed that the days when we could live together are over. A comedy drama with horror elements tells about one long evening coffee She came at night. The new film by Jan Vejnar and Tomáš Pavlíček will make you laugh, but it will also give you chills.

The film that divided Vary: A sensitive person is both hated and adored. They don’t deserve either July 10, 2023 12:00 p.m
Jiří (Jiří Rendl) and Aneta (Annette Nesvadbová) live a relatively normal life of Prague plus or minus thirtysomethings. They have careers that are not well understood by those around them. They start to think about a child, but they don’t know if it will support them or if it will take away their energy for travel, personal or career growth, or the will to live. They meet friends, order food, avoid strangers. They prefer to spend weekends relaxing at home, in Stromovka or in Letenské sady, rather than taking their heels out of the metropolis at all costs.

The relative well-being of the young couple is disturbed by the unexpected night visit of Jirko’s mother Valerie (Simona Peková). She says she has a problem, she had a fight with her partner, she can’t get home and she needs to stay with them. At least for one day. While Aneta, “a pretty confused and maybe a little desperate lady” offers to stay overnight almost without hesitation, Jirka begins to sense a problem. He knows that Valerie is just playing vulnerable, but in reality she is a very capable manipulator.

In the end, living together does not last one day, and a short visit becomes a stick between the cogs of a young couple’s relationship. Valerie doesn’t respect privacy, she won’t forget to properly make amends to Jiří and Aneta for the “boundless spending” due to the importation of food or the renovation of the apartment after Jiří’s father. (“You’re living in a palace, but did you deserve it? I don’t think so.”) She also doesn’t forget about “valuable advice” about sex. Jiří’s prediction came true, and it seems that Valeria doesn’t want to just leave the apartment after her ex-husband.
A comedy that doesn’t make you laugh
It is in this apartment that most of the comedic conversation with sometimes horror style takes place. In an almost non-stop monologue, Peková sprinkles scathing remarks – as if she is trying to return Jirka to her childhood and gradually get Aneta out of his life. Valerie seems to have infiltrated all areas of the young people’s lives. When Aneta wants to take a shower in the morning, she finds her in the bathtub, when she comes tired from work, her mother-in-law wants to watch a “quality Italian movie”.

Even Saturday morning, reserved for rest, is disturbed by Valeria’s need to luxuriate, although it is usually necessary to clean her crumbs on the kitchen counter or empty glasses. The figure of Jirk’s mother seems to resemble Pavel Landovský in forbidden shorts Uninvited guest from 1969. Her scathing remarks are funny, but only to the extent that, even across the screen, they begin to cause feelings of constriction and loss of hope for escape. That’s it She came at night significantly different from similar comedies with a maternal invasion motif. The situations correctly evoke despair, they don’t embarrass the character of the son or the mother, they don’t have tinny music playing, reminding us that we should laugh now.

We will not laugh especially from Aneta’s gradual psychological breakdown. In addition to privacy and control over her own life, she gradually loses her support in Jirko. Although he himself claims that he did not have a very loving relationship with his mother, after her return to his life, he relegates his partner a bit to the proverbial second track and actually does not understand what bothers her so much about the presence of her mother-in-law.
Peková steals apartments and the entire film
At the same time, his character is one of the few things that can be strongly criticized in the film. It is impossible to guess exactly why he becomes passive towards his parents, even more so when he himself drew attention to her masterful ability to manipulate people. We know that his mother has not been a part of his life for a long time, in many moments we see that he keeps a relatively large distance from her. His implicit attachment to Valeria can be justified by the need to catch up with what he lost, on the other hand, Jirka is not very consistent in this either.

We haven’t moved since the 1930s. Czech film Dawn is a Damn Bitter Pill July 5, 2023 1:00 p.m.
Similarly, the last third of the film could be contradicted, when the mother returns to the apartment with her dissident friends, who gradually turn Jiří’s father’s inheritance into a refuge. Valerie in this passage stops acting like a monster and becomes more plastic. She exposes her weaknesses, and the more “horror” passages don’t sound as pronounced as they could if the mother had kept her original annoying face.

On the other hand, it should be noted that none of the “illnesses” represents a fundamental problem, rather it only provides space to dwell on an unanswered question. But here, in seconds, the acting concert of Simona Peková is drowned out, who steals the film in the best sense of the word, just as her character usurps the space of a Prague apartment building. It is also necessary to mention the excellent acting leadership. The main and supporting actors obviously know very well what their character is, what emotions to convey in it, what exactly they should play and in what way. The consistency of the performances is unbelievable, the ensemble never falters, and even though Peková is the main star of the film, you can relate to almost everyone.
Loved ones can be a downfall
The family triangle can once again put us in a situation that almost all of us have gotten into in a moderate version. These are life chapters when the relationship is shaken by the presence of a third person, and it doesn’t matter if that person is family, friends, roommates or someone from work. Such when, like Jiří, we find ourselves in the mill wheels of the patterns of our own family and life, which we begin to build on our own. When, as partners, do we want acceptance from the environment of the other half, before we realize that we are losing ourselves in the effort to please.

It is entering all cinemas She came at night November 9, 2023.
From a cinematic point of view, it is She came at night one of the beautiful surprises of this year’s Karlovy Vary festival. Pavlíček’s flair for comedic style and serious Vejnar found a fine line between a smart film and a relaxing movie that even our parents like to watch on TV on Fridays. And who knows, maybe they’ll think about how their (albeit well-intentioned) advice can be unpleasant.
