SHCP will ask Congress to spend resources from autonomous bodies on culture

Mexico City. The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) will ask the Congress of the Union that the resources that were spent on autonomous organizations be transferred to culture, President Claudia Sheinbaum reported at the morning conference.

“For that part and others, we are making a proposal to Congress, a reduction in the budget of the autonomous organizations so that this budget is allocated to culture and education,” she mentioned when questioned about the 27.8 percent reduction that appears in the 2025 expenditure budget project for culture, compared to 2024.

In 2024, the culture area received a total budget of 16,754 million pesos and by 2025 it will be given 12,081 million pesos, according to the 2025 expenditure budget project.

The president also explained that the reduction that appears in the budget is due to the fact that last year the resources to develop the Chapultepec: Nature and Culture project were incorporated into the culture line.

“There is a part that was destined for Chapultepec, if you remember that it was in culture, Chapultepec is already finished. We are proposing, and this is relevant: we are going to allocate resources for the INBAL schools (National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature), it is something that we have been working on with the Ministry of Culture. He’s coming to work on it. The conservatory and other students were demanding it and in fact, there are many delays in the schools both in infrastructure and in operation, so we are going to cover that part,” said Sheinbaum.

“With this we would be – in addition to what is already coming in culture – supporting culture even more and we are going to give a very important part to education,” he mentioned.

In turn, he referred to raising Army salaries, since in particular the salaries of soldiers lagged behind the National Guard.

On the other hand, when referring to the INE, Sheinbaum said that this institute accepted that it can even reduce the budget in view of next year’s election.

“So there comes savings that can be distributed among these important areas and of course culture is a priority,” he concluded.
