BRATISLAVA – Canadian ice hockey player Shawn Lalonde became a new member of HC Slovan Bratislava. The 33-year-old defender came as a replacement for compatriot Matt Murphy, whose contract was prematurely terminated by the club on Wednesday.

“In the person of Shawn Lalonde, a physically well-built defender is coming to Slovan, who is able to make excellent use of his body and be emphatic in fights and in key areas in the defensive zone.

At the same time, he is a player who reads the game well, plays positionally, and his first pass, as well as a hard shot from the right-hander, have excellent parameters. We believe that his rich player experience will help us in our situation and we will be more effective defensively with him at both ends of the rink.” said assistant coach Rudolf Jendek for the official website of the Whites.

Lalonde changed five clubs in the previous five years. He worked in the German clubs Cologne and Nuremberg, then spent two years in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), in which he wore the jerseys of Vladivostok and Cherepovets, and last year he played for the Belarusian Dinamo Minsk. In 48 duels, he collected 14 points (1+13) in the regular season. He also has one start in the NHL – in the 2012/13 season he started for Chicago, which drafted him in 2008 in the 3rd round out of the 68th overall.

Lalonde was supposed to arrive in Bratislava on Friday morning. However, his inclusion in the lineup for Friday’s match in Nitra was unlikely. He should make his debut for Slovan on Sunday at home against Dukla Trenčín.
