About ten in every 100,000 children aged 0 to 14 years went to the doctor last week with whooping cough. That is more than double than the week before. The number is also higher than the three years before.
Large increase in pneumonia
Not only whooping cough is going around, the number of children with pneumonia is also increasing sharply. Last week, 130 in every 100,000 5 to 14-year-olds went to a GP with pneumonia. That is more than twice as much as at the highest point last year. Nivel calls it ‘a remarkable amount’.
There has also been an increase in young children aged 0 to 4 years, but Nivel states that the figures are lower than in the years before the corona pandemic.
The increase in pneumonia continues to occur among young people and young adults, general practitioners see. Nivel was not immediately available to provide a possible explanation for the increase.
