Another sharp rise in the price of staple foods since the beginning of October. In just three weeks, the products raised their prices on the stock exchange with up to 3%. Like it there is a record growth for sugar, which has already exceeded 3 BGN per kilogramand for dairy products, from which we also see prices 35 BGN per kilogram of cheese. To check how much the main products that enter the consumer basket cost us – in our country and in other European countries – we will compare the prices in Bulgaria with those in four European countriespoints out NOVA.
Already in the first days of October, Atanas Hristozov seriously felt the difference at the checkout of the store.
“There is growth in all assets. We paid 15 BGN for 4 tomatoes and 5 cucumbers., which is a significant increase. With BGN 50 in store, you can hardly buy anything compared to last year, “says the man.
Are we already buying cheaper bread and for how long?
The strong growth of the stand in the last 2-3 weeks, traders also report.
“This comes from our producers, unfortunately their production costs must necessarily include new prices because they will not be able to sustain themselves”explained Ana Nenkova, director of a grocery store.
We go to the market in our country and other countries with the NOVA team. We shop at the same time on a common list with 20 of the best products, which we buy every week: in equal quantities and of the same brands. They are included in our list seasonal fruit and vegetables, dairy products, pork and chicken, as well as basic foods such as: sugar, rice, flour and oil. We also add a liter of soft drink, a pack of biscuits and liquid chocolate. And we compare the prices of stands in retail chains in our country and in Greece, Great Britain, Belgium and France
Producers: There is a risk that Bulgaria will run out of bread in some areas
Let’s start shopping from Bulgaria in a large retail chain. We buy tomatoes for sale for BGN 3.19. Per kilo cucumbers we pay BGN 2.99, bananas cost BGN 3.79a we find sugar for BGN 2.59. Liter oil is sold for BGN 4.79., a One kilogram of cheese costs 26 BGN. 200 g of liquid chocolate costs just over 5 BGN and a liter of soft drink – 1.18 BGN. The balance: in our country the market from the list of 20 products comes out by just over 100 BGN.
Is the next stop France. For the last yearbut the prices of animal products have risen more dramatically – in the case of meat, the greatest increase is recorded in chicken. Vegetables cost almost twice as much as on the shelves in our country, our market shows. A kilogram of tomatoes costs 3.50 eurosone kilogram cucumbers – about 3 euros. However, meat and dairy are cheaper. The prices of liquid chocolate are also lower. We pay the same oil and flour at the cash desk. For the products listed here, the bill is just over 60 euros or 118.5 BGN.
Coffee can become a luxury for Europeans
The market then continues on Belgium. The capital of Europe is not a cheap place to live, but compared to neighboring countries it’s a little cheaper here though and is located in the center of Europe. And there compared to the Sofia market – we pay more for most fruits and vegetables. However, bananas, dairy, and pork are cheaper. And for oil, flour and sugar the price differences are minimal compared to those of our country. At the checkout here, for the 20 products, we pay just over 50 euros, or 98 BGN and 50 cents.
The fourth stage of the weekly market is United Kingdom. Again, we buy the same fruit, vegetables and basic products. But at the end of the market – the bill is more than 30% lower than in our country: 30.9 pounds or 69.5 BGN, despite the increase in prices on the island as well.
In the end it is shopping Greece. The same products cost 47 euros – or BGN 92.
Bulgaria is among the EU countries with high inflationshows the latest Eurostat data. Life in our country has become more expensive on average by 19%, but the increase in food is greater – up to 25%. In comparison, on average inflation in Europe is 11.8%. More the cost of living increased in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and less in France and Greece.
