– In our area, we have seen a significant increase, and the trend is going in the wrong direction, says infection control chief Lars Kåre Kleppe at Stavanger University Hospital (SUS).

In recent days, the infection on Nord Jæren has risen sharply. On Thursday, the news came about 65 new cases of infection in the region, which already has decided to extend the strict infection control measures.

The infection trend will also have consequences for hospitalizations, it was stated at a press conference on Thursday.

– The math is relentless

Although there is the most infection among children right now, the infection passes on to the family and close contacts.

– With an R-number that is well above 1 in SUS ‘catchment area, we can risk more than 100 daily cases of infection already in a week’s time if there is no change. Mathematics is relentless, Kleppe said at the press conference.

He is concerned about the situation, and says it is very important that the strict measures continue locally even if the national measures are released.

Affects hospital operations

SUS has now switched to the yellow level due to the infection situation. This has consequences for patients who may have their planned treatment postponed.

– We are at a tipping point, and the situation can quickly turn around, says emergency manager Elisabeth Haga Jacobsen at SUS.

She points out that 37 patients have been diagnosed with coronary heart disease in the emergency department in recent weeks.

– Ordinary virus is no longer found in samples that are analyzed at the laboratory, only mutated virus. It is mostly that the British variety but also the South African is present.

Several cases of import infection

Of the 40 infected in Stavanger, 35 are close contacts of known cases of infection. Three have been traveling, and two have an uncertain source of infection.

– We are concerned about the infection situation on Nord-Jæren. The situation is being closely monitored, and if we see a worsening in the next few days, we will consider stricter measures than we have today, said mayor Kari Nessa Nordtun to NRK on Tuesday.

Sandnes municipality reports 12 new cases of infection. Here, three are registered on entry and two with a known route of infection. The rest are registered as close contacts.

Randaberg municipality with its around 11,000 inhabitants has nine positive tests on Wednesday, while Sola municipality has four positive corona tests.

From Thursday, schools and kindergartens in Stavanger are at the red level, but this has not been introduced in the other municipalities.
