And again a shark attacked a human! A surfer was bitten by a shark on Long Island on Wednesday morning. This is the second attack this month on the popular beach in New York, USA.
The 41-year-old was on his board at Smith Point Beach on Fire Island. Suddenly, a 1.5-meter tiger shark bit his leg around 8 a.m., according to the authorities.
Steve Bellone, Suffolk County executive, says the tiger shark left a four-inch slash. “The victim was on a surfboard, was pushed off the board and hit the shark,” Bellone describes the incident.
“The surfer saw the shark coming towards him again after the first bite,” said Bellone at the press conference. Fortunately, at that moment a wave carried the surfer and his board to the shore. “That was the last contact with the shark.”
Second attack in ten days
The victim was cared for by a park ranger before an ambulance took him to a local hospital, WABC reports.
In early July, a lifeguard on the beach fell victim to a shark during a training exercise. “The fact that two such incidents have occurred with us, in this facility and on this beach is unprecedented,” says Bellone. “We’ve never seen anything like it.”
Are you afraid of sharks?
He warned that more frequent tiger shark attacks could become a “new normal”. These types of sharks now live closer to the shore. In the future, lifeguards would continue to look out for the animals and would also use a drone to track them down.
