That day, a swimmer in her sixties was seriously injured after being bitten by a shark in the leg. Although the last shark attack dates back to 1958, reports Le Parisien, warming waters have prompted US authorities to develop the deployment of drones above this beach for surveillance.

“We’re not going to stop surfing because of this one incident,” says surf school owner Christopher Sheehy. For Hans Walters, researcher at the New York Aquarium, “the most interesting thing for me is not the frequency of the attacks, but the frequency with which they do not take place”.

In 2022, eight cases of shark attacks were reported in New York State, while only 20 such cases have been known in the state since 1837
