Sharjah Electricity Launches Most Efficient Gas-Powered Plant in the Middle East and Africa | GE Vernova Collaboration

Sharjah, 19 October / WAM / The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, the Hamriyah Independent Power Plant Company (Chipco), and General Electric Vernova (listed on the New York Stock Exchange with the symbol GE), announced the start of commercial operation of all three turbines at the Hamriyah Independent Power Plant. Electricity, as this combined cycle station is currently the most efficient gas-powered electricity generation station in the Middle East and Africa region and helps reduce the carbon intensity of the energy generated in Sharjah.

By providing a much higher level of efficiency compared to previous power generation assets installed in the emirate; The three GE Vernova 9HA.01 turbines are expected to help Sharjah Electricity generate an additional 1.8 gigawatts of power while reducing carbon emissions at a rate of up to 4 million tons per year compared to generating the same amount of electricity using traditional technologies, which is equivalent to Removing one million cars from the roads of the UAE.

GE’s gas power unit Vernova provided major engineering, construction and procurement work and equipped the plant with three 9HA.01 gas turbines powering three H84 generators and three STF-D650 steam turbines powering three A74 generators and three steam generators. Heat recovery equipment (HRSGs) The company will also provide spare parts, repair and maintenance services for the project’s power generation assets for approximately 25 years.

His Excellency Saeed Sultan Baljiu Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, said: The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority is committed to meeting Sharjah’s growing needs for reliable and sustainable energy at affordable prices and supporting the UAE’s endeavors to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and the Hamriyah Independent Electric Power Plant is considered an integral part. From the authority’s road map for the year 2030 and falls within the framework of our strategy to supply the Sharjah network with energy with a lower carbon footprint, and we are pleased to cooperate with leading institutions at the sector level such as “Chipco” and General Electric Vernova in this vital project, which we expect will contribute to generating up to 40% of electricity. Electricity needs in Sharjah.

For his part, Omar Al-Mulla, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chipco, said: The operation of all three turbines at the Hamriya Independent Power Plant was the result of more than 11 million hours of work by more than 1,500 people from more than 20 countries working for the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority. Chipco, GE Vernova and other stakeholders, and together we are committed to increasing the production capacity of electrical energy in the UAE in parallel with reducing carbon emissions of generation operations to help address global climate challenges and support the growth path.

Joseph Anis, President and CEO of GE’s Vernova gas power unit in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: The development of the Hamriyah Independent Electric Power Plant was a distinguished project in many ways, starting from the innovative financing structure to the global workforce that continued to implement the project with high efficiency until… During the pandemic period and ending with the use of model turbines that set many records, the successful commercial operation of the three turbines in the station constitutes tangible evidence of the strength of the vision of the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority and the dedication of all parties involved in the project.

It is noteworthy that the Model H turbine technology from General Electric Vernova has set world records in terms of combined cycle operation and efficiency. More than 140 units have been ordered so far, with this technology exceeding more than 1.8 million commercial hours. This technology also provides high flexibility as it operates It is able to provide energy supplies according to the level of demand, which helps stabilize the network. It is capable of burning a diverse mixture of fuels, including a percentage of up to 50% hydrogen, with the possibility of raising this percentage to 100%. Combined cycle stations supported by this technology are scheduled to be allocated with a system Post-combustion capture to reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%.

In 2019, the financial services unit of General Electric Vernova and the Japanese company Sumitomo announced a joint development project and raised financing through public and private financial institutions amounting to about one billion dollars to support construction and operation operations. Upon reaching the financial closing stage of the deal, the developers… The partners formed a joint venture for the project, “Chipco”, with “Shikoku Electric Power” and “Sharjah Asset Management”, the investment arm of the Sharjah government, to build, own and operate the project.

It is noteworthy that General Electric Vernova has always played a major role in supporting the development of the energy sector in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries for more than 80 years, and the company’s investments in the country include its service center in Jebel Ali in Dubai, which provides maintenance, testing and repair solutions for generators and gas turbines and has provided its services for more than 80 companies and institutions from more than 35 countries.
