Rescue work was halted yesterday to prepare the building with explosives. Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to make landfall in Florida today. The fear was that the building would collapse either by itself or by the strong wind. In order to keep the consequences as limited as possible, a controlled explosion was chosen.
Rescue work is likely to resume an hour after the explosion.
Local residents were not required to leave their homes, but were required to close windows and doors. They also had to not let their air conditioning supply air from outside because of the dust that is released during the explosion.
