Most of the HEMA stores will remain open, but you cannot buy underwear there. At Primera you can bring your package, but not buy magazines. And garden centers that get more than half of their sales from pet supplies may also remain open.
For example, all garden centers of Ranzijn, Welkoop and Boerenbond are open, a spokesman for Tuinbranche Nederland told NU.nl on Tuesday when asked. “They can show that they get more than 50 percent of their sales from pet supplies and food, and then they’re a specialty pet store.”
The parcel points at the garden centers may also remain open. “And outside flowers and Christmas trees can be sold.” The package points may also remain open at the Bruna’s and Primera’s. “But we are not allowed to sell magazines, people have to get them further from the supermarket,” says Gert van Doorn, director of Primera.
He thinks the 525 Primera stores could relieve supermarkets by selling magazines, tobacco and lottery tickets. That is exactly what HEMA does, says a spokesperson: unburden supermarkets.
Almost all 540 stores of that chain will also remain open. “Non-essential items, including underwear, are covered and removed from the stores. But customers can come to us for food and baby items,” said a spokesman.
“For example, we are the largest pastry baker in the Netherlands. Two thousand cakes are on order for Tuesday alone.”
Shops that carry out repairs, such as bicycle shops, car garages and shoemakers, are also open. They just can’t sell anything.
