Basel is currently the most exciting place in Switzerland. Or is the city rather ordinary?
Basel has always been on the fringes of Switzerland. Apart from FCB, pharmaceuticals and carnival, little was heard from the city. But now that is changing: With Beat Jans, a Basel native is finally back in the Federal Council. Xherdan Shaqiri is bringing back football euphoria, and with the Eurovision Song Contest next year, the event of the century is approaching. What does that mean for Basel?
Basel had to wait several decades for a Federal Council, and the city in the border triangle felt ignored. Switzerland was just happy about the medicines from the Rhine knee. And the millions in cantonal financial equalization. But now the city is moving into the international spotlight, both nationally and internationally.
Benjamin Rosch, the Basel resident of the CH Media domestic editorial team, says in the podcast “Behind the Headline” about the new, old Basel heroes: “It is not so important whether Shaqiri scores free kick goals or Jans makes concrete decisions in favour of Basel, the main thing is that the two are there.”
