After more than six weeks of strict COVID-19 lockdowns, Shanghai will gradually reopen from Monday. That reports Press Agency Reuters Sunday.
First, businesses such as shops and hair salons will open their doors. Many of these are only allowed to open with limited capacity. No details are yet known about the pace and extent of the easing.
The inhabitants of the city do not believe much of the mayor’s words. Many of the 26 million inhabitants have been in a strict lockdown since the end of February. They grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of access to food and care, the poor quality of government rations and the location of quarantine centers. Online shopping was also virtually impossible due to a shortage of delivery drivers. Several critical statements about living conditions on social media have been censored.
Zero target in Shanghai suburbs reached
China has an exceptional view on eradicating the virus: they aim for zero infections. To achieve this, all residents had to be tested. To this end, the government deployed the army and sent thousands of health workers to Shanghai.
The zero target has been reached in the suburbs of Shanghai. The first relaxations will therefore be used there. At the same time, the measures in the center have been tightened in the past two weeks. Among other things, fences have been placed around residential blocks and the number of home deliveries has been further reduced.
The number of infections continues to decrease. For example, only 168 new infections were identified on Saturday.
