Shanghai is easing a bit after six weeks of strict corona lockdown

According to the deputy mayor of the city, supermarkets, hairdressers and other businesses will gradually reopen their doors – but under strict conditions. That is, not too many people. Restaurants are allowed to provide takeout meals again.

Zero-covid

For more than six weeks, China has been trying to contain the outbreak: a zero-covid policy still applies, which requires strict measures.

Residents are obliged to stay at home and are tested almost daily. This tactic initially worked well, but the more contagious omikron variant makes it increasingly difficult to contain the number of infections.

A week and a half ago, the city council already reported that the virus was ‘under control’: the number of infections has decreased significantly since then.

The city is the financial center of the country. Many Chinese multinationals have their headquarters there. Many production companies are also located in Shanghai.
