The funeral was broadcast online and on television to fans around the world.
Shane’s widow, Victoria Mary Clark, shared memories of Shane through various objects and symbols during the ceremony.
Pastor Pat Gilbert paid tribute to the “poet, lyricist, singer, trailblazer” at the service, who “reflected life as it was lived in our times, exposing accepted norms that in reality seem unacceptable.”
These included Shane’s “Crock Of Gold” book, a collection of his art and lyrics, a tray that Shane’s bandmate Spider Stacey used to “shoot the singer in the back of the head” with, and the couple’s wedding album.
In her farewell, she described the departed as someone who “lived so close to the edge of the cliff that it often seemed like he was going to fall off immediately”, adding that he was never interested in being “normal”.
Shane’s contemporaries performed his most famous songs during the service. Australian musician Nick Cave performed “A Rainy Night In Soho” on piano.
