A shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey said.

The quake was at a depth of 9.9 kilometers. The Indonesian Geophysical Agency did not report an immediate tsunami, but warned of possible aftershocks. A magnitude of 6.3 was initially reported.

Video obtained by AFP shows panicked people in the village of Lambonga in Central Sulawesi huddled in groups outside their homes as they seek refuge in fear of aftershocks.

In November, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck the island of Java in the Southeast Asian archipelago, killing 602 people. Most of the victims of this earthquake were killed in collapsing buildings or landslides triggered by the quake. An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the country’s Sumatra island in April, shaking the homes of panicked residents but causing no casualties or damage, BGNES recalls.
