Arms crossed above his head, torso tilted in his famous hip swing and an outfit reminiscent of his “Hips Don’t Lie” music video. A statue representing singer Shakira was inaugurated this Tuesday, December 26 in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia.
The 6.5 m high monument was made of bronze and aluminum by sculptor Yino Márquez and students from the local art school. It was installed on the banks of the Magdalena River in the city on the north coast of Colombia. It depicts the star performing one of her signature dance moves, wearing a bra and long skirt of the same color. The bottom of the skirt, slightly raised and made of aluminum, “symbolizes the waves and the river”, we can read on a plaque affixed to the feet of the work.
“Thank you to the sculptor Yino Márquez and the students of the district art school for this illustration of the enormous artistic talent of the people of my country,” Shakira wrote on X (ex-Twitter).

On the plaque at the feet of the sculpture, we can read: “On February 2, 1977, came into the world in Barranquilla: a heart that composes, hips that do not lie, an incomparable talent, a voice that moves the masses and barefoot who walk for the good of children and humanity.”

The sculpture was unveiled during a public ceremony, in the presence of the singer’s parents, William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll, and the mayor of the town, Jaime Pumarejo Heins. On Instagram, the Colombian interpreter shared several photos of her family during the inauguration.
The 46-year-old global star relaunched his career this year with “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”, which recounts his difficult separation from ex-footballer Gerard Piqué. Created with Argentinian DJ Bizarrap, the song immediately became a global hit and won the 2023 Latino Grammy for Song of the Year.
Shakira was also recently confronted by the Spanish courts, by which she was fined more than seven million euros in November for tax evasion. It remains subject to several procedures still in progress.
