Shakira Reaches Settlement to Avoid Tax Evasion Trial in Spain

Colombian pop star Shakira reached a settlement yesterday with public prosecutors to avoid being tried in Barcelona on charges of not paying income taxes in Spain amounting to 14.5 million euros ($15.7 million) between 2012 and 2014.

As part of the agreement, Shakira agreed to the charges and to pay a fine equal to 50% of the amount owed, i.e. more than 7.3 million euros.

Judge Jose Manuel del Amo Sanchez asked, “Do you realize the facts and agree to the new penalties that were requested?”, to which Shakira answered, “Yes.” The singer previously vowed that she would fight what she described as false accusations.

The singer, who has been living with her two children in Miami since her separation from Pique, confirmed in a statement, “I had two choices: to continue fighting until the end, putting my peace of mind and that of my children at risk, and to stop producing songs, albums, and tours,” or “to close this chapter of my life and leave it behind me.” ».
