Shakira Plea Deal: Spanish Tax Fraud Case and Sentencing

Shakira told the judge that she had accepted a plea deal with the prosecution.

Under the deal, the 46-year-old singer agreed to receive a three-year suspended sentence in exchange for a million-euro fine.

The prosecutor’s office had accused Shakira of defrauding the Spanish tax office of 14.5 million euros in connection with income earned between 2012 and 2014.

In July, prosecutors announced that they would demand that Shakira be sentenced to eight years and two months in prison and a fine of 24 million euros.

The prosecutor’s office claims that Shakira moved to Spain in 2011, when it became public knowledge about her relationship with the defender of the football club “Barcelona” Gerard Pique, however, the country of the musician’s tax residence was the Bahamas until 2015.

The musician’s lawyers explained that she completely moved to Spain in 2015 and fulfilled all tax obligations.
