The singer, who has two children with Spanish footballer Gerard Pique, described their separation as the “darkest time of her life” in the October edition of Elle magazine. The two celebrities have been together for 12 years and have two children, Milan, nine, and Sasha, seven.
“Difficult for me, but also for my children”
So far, the “Waka Waka” singer has avoided addressing this painful subject. “Oh, it’s really hard to talk about it personally, especially since this is the first time I have addressed this situation in an interview,” he told the magazine. “I stayed silent and just tried to process everything,” he added. “Um, and yes, it’s hard to talk about, especially since I’m still going through it. Because I am a public figure and because our separation is not like a normal separation. And so it was difficult not only for me, but also for my children. Incredibly difficult, “he added.
The 45-year-old admits that he “tried to hide the situation” in front of his children to “protect them”. Which, according to her, is her “number one mission in life”. She explained that the comments about her couple read in the press are about her children and that they sometimes “hear things in school”.
New relationship for Pique
The former couple announced their split in June of this year, but Gerard, 35, appears to have moved on quickly after starting a new relationship with public relations student Clara Chia Marti, 23.
Gerard and Shakira first met when the footballer was shooting the video for the singer’s official single for the 2010 World Cup, “Waka Waka”, before starting a relationship that same year.
A brief statement, released by the singer’s communications agency, confirmed the couple’s separation in June, saying, “We are sorry to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our top priority, we ask you. to respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding. “
A broken deal
Shakira is said to have been “very angry” when Gerard made his new girlfriend public, according to close sources. She reportedly broke an agreement that she should keep her new relationship a secret for a year. Shakira’s family says the star was furious after seeing her ex’s photos of her with her new 23-year-old girlfriend, Socialite reports. According to the Spanish celebrity site, the couple had made a deal not to be seen in public with their new partners for a period of one year after the split and these photos would “deeply hurt Shakira”.
