Mexico City.- Shakira is already part of Billion Club from Spotify, the playlist that includes all those songs that exceed one billion views, for his 2005 hit “Hips don’t lie”. The Colombian singer thanked her fans for her love, for currently maintaining one of her greatest successes.
In July of last year, Spotify implemented a new category within its playlists, nourished by the most listened to songs on the streaming platform. As soon as a given hit is listened to more than a billion times, the multimedia service notifies users that a new song has been added to their ranks.
Today Shakira enters the Billion Club list, which also includes songs like “Bohemian Rapshody” by Queen, “Everything I wanted” by Billie Eilish, “Without me” by Eminem, and “Viva la vida”. ”, by Coldplay, to name a few.
The singer showed her gratitude to the people who have followed her career over the years with a brief but emotional Twitter post, in which she said she was overwhelmed by so much love received from her fans.
This is how the hit “Hips don’t lie” was born.
“ Hips don’t lie”, as it is translated into Spanish, was the second single from “Fijación Oral Vol. II”, the artist’s seventh album, released in 2005, and one of her most successful, because although it had already been Known for several compositions in English, it was at this time that Shakira achieved the international recognition that accompanies her today.
In 2006, it became the best-selling song of the year and one of the 30 best-selling songs in music history. There are some media that claim it was the most successful composition of the 2000s.
“Hips don´t lie”, a collage song?
At that time, radio and television stations played Shakira’s song over and over again, in a duet with Haitian musician Wyclef Jean, and although the rumors of plagiarism were never greater than the desires of the listeners for request that it be played on the radio transmitter in their region, the demands have been made since its release.
In 2005, Puerto Rican singer Jerry Rivera argued that the singer’s “hips” were moving to the sound of a song of hers from 1992. Shakira said that, in fact, the riddim of “Hips don’t lie” was inspired by a song even older.
And not only in that one, but he rescued fragments of some other compositions to create the success that still brings him fruits and royalties today, since he takes up musical excerpts from “Amores como el Nuestro”, a song by Jenni Rivera, which take place in the introduction , when the trumpets sound in the background, but again, it turned out not, because the melody belonged to another song of previous creation.
The unbeatable success
The success of “Hips don’t lie” was such that it exceeded the impact generated by songs like “Whenever, Wherever”, “Underneath Your Clothes” and “La Tortura”. In turn, productions that would go on sale years later such as “She Wolf”, “Loca”, and “Waka Waka” would not reach the accumulated figures of this song.
