Shakira Faces Accusations of Tax Fraud: Second Lawsuit Filed in Spain

The world-famous singer Shakira is facing a serious problem. The Spanish prosecutor’s office filed a legal action against her and accused her of tax fraud in the amount of almost 6.7 million euros. This is not the first such accusation, and the singer faces up to eight years in prison.

The prosecutor’s office in Spain filed another lawsuit against the Colombian singer Shakira. According to the server SkyNews accused her of tax fraud. They are said to have been investigated by the police in July, due to suspicion of non-payment of income tax and property tax in 2018.

At the time, the singer was said to be living in Barcelona with her ex-partner and FC Barcelona football star Gerard Pique and their two children. The plaintiffs argue that she was domiciled in Spain and therefore liable to tax there on all her worldwide income, regardless of where it was earned.

This is not the first such suspicion. In November, the singer is to stand trial for alleged fraud worth 14.5 million euros, which she allegedly committed between 2012 and 2014, the agency reminds Reuters. If found guilty, the singer faces up to eight years in prison and a fine of 24 million euros, i.e. about 592 million crowns.

The prosecution claims that Shakira did not live in the Bahamas in the years mentioned, as she herself stated, but in Spain. However, this would mean that the tax laws would also apply to her and she would be obliged to pay taxes. But her defenders stand by the fact that the singer visited the country only occasionally.

The singer denies all the accusations. “I am confident that I have enough evidence to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favor,” she said.
