SGS Essen Secures Well-Deserved Victory in Duisburg Neighborhood Duel

SGS Essen deservedly won the neighborhood duel in Duisburg 1-0. After a dominant performance by SGS in the first half, a failed cross almost brought the Zebras back into the game.

After the 1:4 defeat at 1. FC Köln, the next NRW duel awaited coach Thomas Gerstner and MSV. The still winless Duisburg women, who were in second-to-last place in the table with just one point before the derby against SGS Essen, started with two new players in the starting line-up: Parcell and Hess started for Cin and Kappenberger (both bench).

The SGS recently put up a good fight against champions Bayern Munich and lost 2-0. Coach Markus Högner therefore only swapped once. Berentzen started on the left wing for Elmazi, who initially sat on the bench. The starting eleven returnee and her teammates on the offensive should also quickly come into focus, as the guests took control of the game right from the start. In an extremely deep 5-4-1, MSV limited itself exclusively to defense from the first second.

Meißner and Maier miss the early lead for the SGS

However, less than two minutes had been played before the SGS had their first big chance to get off to a perfect start: After a one-two on the right side, Kowalski found captain Meißner with her flat cross, who, however, chased the ball over the Duisburg box from nine meters ( 2.).

66 percent ball possession and 7:1 shots on goal in the first half also demonstrated the statistical dominance of the Essen team, who almost took advantage of a mistake by Mahmutovic to take the lead in the 13th minute. The MSV goalkeeper misjudged a wide cross from the right half-space – instead, striker Maier headed the ball from 14 meters, but only hit the post.

Rieke scores shortly before the break

Otherwise, the guests kept biting their teeth against Duisburg’s deep defense. Crosses and passes in the final third rarely found teammates.

One of Kowalski’s numerous corners was correctly addressed shortly before half-time and found Rieke. Parcell deflected the midfielder’s header from six meters, but the ball still bounced over the line for a deserved 1-0 half-time lead (40′).

Halverkamps almost brings MSV back

After the break, the Duisburg women came out of the locker room more courageously and put the SGS under significantly more pressure. The guests were lucky that Halverkamp’s failed cross from the right side only landed on the post (51′).

However, the Essen women themselves also remained dangerous offensively, after a misunderstanding between Fürst and Mahmutovic, Bathmann prevented Maier from making it 0-2 from MSV’s perspective at the last moment (55th). The Duisburg women played more in the second half, but they didn’t produce more than the not really dangerous attempts by the busy Halverkamps (56th, 59th).

In the middle of the second half, the Essen team increasingly regained control, kept the Zebras away from their own goal and repeatedly had opportunities for goal number two. However, since both Rieke (74th) and Sterner (80th) narrowly failed after Kowalski’s standards, the game remained open until the final minutes. However, the MSV didn’t have a late answer, so the Essen team ultimately managed to take the narrow but well-deserved lead without any problems and were able to celebrate their second win of the season.

On Sunday (4 p.m.) the Zebras, who are still waiting for the first threesome, will play against Eintracht Frankfurt; the day before (Saturday, 2 p.m.) Essen hosted Werder Bremen.
