SGKB is at the bottom of WWF’s environmental ranking

St. Galler Kantonalbank comes in last in the WWF ranking – TKB is in the top group

The WWF believes that banks can have a decisive impact on the achievement of climate goals. That’s why the environmental association regularly examines whether Swiss banks are meeting international climate and biodiversity goals. In the latest ranking, the St.Galler Kantonalbank is doing well – the Thurgauer Kantonalbank, on the other hand, can take a place on the podium.

The Thurgauer Kantonalbank is more than satisfied with its results. It finished third in the ranking behind Zürcher Kantonalbank and Raiffeisen. “This situation shows that the bank has recognized the importance of environmental issues and has taken effective measures,” said TKB. The bank gets good marks especially for its lending business. He discusses environmental issues with corporate customers and supports them in decarbonisation, according to the WWF report. The environmental society also gives a good appreciation of the environmental criteria for mortgage lending and eco-mortgages.

However, the main group of Swiss banks still has room for improvement, as the WWF report shows. No bank is yet on a path leading to a climate target of 1.5 degrees. The WWF writes that most banks are performing poorly, especially in their core business of loans and finance, despite progress. Mainly because they would be wasted on buildings that have too much CO2balance sheet.
