The comeback of the decade was never within reach. After the 0:5 in the first leg of the relegation to the Hessenliga, the SG Viktoria Bronnzell ended the season forgivingly and achieved a draw against the SG Bornheim in the local Heppeau.

What would have had to happen for SG Viktoria Bronnzell to turn things around and make up for the swatter from the first leg? In any case, plenty of goals, but Stefan Dresel’s team and the guest saved with it. But SG Bornheim liked it a lot more, because everything was decided with their own goal shortly after the break. Mohamedelamin Camara scored from a central position, although there were discussions as to whether Camara previously controlled the leather with his arm (51′). After that, Sascha Volk’s team didn’t do too much. The head was probably already in the final on Wednesday against TuS Dietkirchen in Fernwald.

Although exhausted, the Bronnzeller team was by no means deeply sad after the end of the game. Rather, an outstanding season remains in the mind, as Dresel made clear: “The runner-up championship is in the foreground. We’re still celebrating. The disappointment isn’t too great, because we could expect it to happen that way.” Dresel was completely satisfied with the performance previously shown. He could too, because Viktoria made an effort from the start and put Bornheim under pressure. It was a wild game at first.

Relegation to the Hessen League: SG Bronnzell fails at SG Bornheim

Last year’s group league champions received a small glimmer of hope after the lead by Christoph Sternstein (18th), who pushed the ball over the line after Kilian Sandner’s speed run. Bronnzell did well in the period that followed, had regular chances to score and a top-class double chance to make it 2-0 when Sternstein missed first and then Marek Weber in the margin (29′). “We played very well in the first half,” said Dresel, while Tim Horenkamp missed the efficiency of himself and his teammates.

Despite the clear conditions, it was noticeable until the very end that Viktoria wanted to end the season with a home win. And Sternstein, Weber and Co. had the 2:1 on the foot several times, but it shouldn’t succeed anymore. Instead, referee Daniel Heist briefly took center stage when he gave Bornheim a penalty shortly before the end. Nobody knew why, after a brief consultation with the assistant, he reversed his decision. “We were mentally exhausted after the first leg. Everything is fine now because we know that we have left strong teams behind us in the league,” said Horenkamp, who can now look forward to the team trip to Pilsen.
