The Bremen-East team (SGBO) was founded on March 7, 1972 through the merger of the handball departments of TV Mahndorf and TV Arbergen. This step was taken because handball was becoming increasingly important in the east of Bremen. The aim was to optimally promote talented handball players and to further strengthen the sport in the region by founding another club.[1]

In May 2016, the members of the clubs SG Bremen-Ost, TV Arbergen and TV Mahndorf decided to merge to form a joint sports club. The football team FC Mahndorf later joined the merger as a third partner. The result was the founding of a large sports club in the east of Bremen with over 2,000 members.[2]

On November 16, 2020, the new Bremen-East Sports Association (SGBO) was founded through the legal merger of the clubs SG Arbergen-Mahndorf and TuS Vahr. This step followed the votes of the clubs involved in 2019, which had decided on the merger. The aim of the merger was to pool the sporting resources in the east of Bremen and create a future-oriented large club.

Originally, a merger of four clubs was planned, including OT Bremen and ATSV Sebaldsbrück. However, since the required three-quarters majority among the members of these two clubs could not be achieved, the boards of SG Arbergen-Mahndorf and TuS Vahr decided to push ahead with the merger anyway. The SGBO is thus continuing the path of mergers that began in 2016 with the founding of SG Arbergen-Mahndorf through the merger of TV Arbergen, TV Mahndorf and FC Mahndorf.[3]

In 1972, the newly founded Bremen-Ost team registered its men’s team in the field handball regional league north, the second highest league in the country. With 20:8 points from 14 games, the team finished second in the table, but this was not enough to gain direct promotion to the Bundesliga. However, when the champions of the regional league north, Grün-Weiß Dankersen, withdrew from the competition, the Bremen-Ost team was given the chance to gain promotion to the Bundesliga in 1973.[4]

On April 1, 1973 at 5 p.m., SG Bremen-Ost played its first league game in the field handball Bundesliga, North Division, against TV Angermund 09, but lost 19:10. The second game against TV Oppum 1894 was also lost 9:16. It was not until the third match day that SG Bremen-Ost achieved its first victory in the top division: with a 14:10 victory over the field handball team from Eintracht Braunschweig, the team secured its first victory, which took place in front of only 12 spectators.

The season balance after 14 league games was really solid for a promoted team: With 4 wins and 10 defeats, a goal difference of 176:207 and 8:20 points, SG Bremen-Ost finished 6th out of 8 teams, ahead of HSG Westende/Hamborn 07 and Eintracht Braunschweig.[5]

After the DHB restructured the field handball Bundesliga, the first league was split into three separate regional leagues in which the teams fought to qualify for the championship finals. SG Bremen-Ost was one of the 6 teams in the Regionalliga Nord and reached third place in the table after 10 games, but this was just not enough to qualify for the finals.[6] The club’s weakest season came a year later, in 1975, when it finished fifth and last in the regional league. In 1976, the field handball team was finally deregistered.[7]

In the field handball Bundesliga all-time table, SG Bremen-Ost is ranked 30th out of 35 teams.

The A and B youth field handball teams made it to the top league several times and have already won the North German championship.[8]

The men’s handball team regularly took part in the Regionalliga Nord, the third highest division of the German Handball Association at the time, from the 1980s to the early 1990s. The club played in the Regionalliga for the first time in the 1982/83 season and won its first game on the first match day against TSV Trap. The second game was lost, but only narrowly by 19:20 against VfL Bad Schwartau. Despite a good start, the club finished last after 26 match days and was relegated.[9] In 1986/87, the SGBO returned to the Regionalliga and narrowly managed to stay in the league, finishing 10th. The club established itself in the middle of the league and managed to finish seventh three times in a row from 1987 to 1990. In 1991/92, the club was in danger of relegation, but one season later, in 1992/93, it achieved the best placing in the club’s history, finishing fourth. In 1994/95, the club only finished 12th and was relegated to the fourth division.[10]

In 1988, the SGBO men’s indoor handball team took part in the DHB Cup for the first time and surprisingly defeated second division team TV Emsdetten 22:18. As a third division team, the club entered the North group, the second round of the cup, and was eliminated after losing to TuS Nettelstedt 18:22. In October 1988/89, the second cup participation followed, but lost in the first round to VfL Hameln. After a cup season break, the SGBO took part in the DHB Cup again in 1990/91 and defeated VfL Eintracht Hagen 24:22 in the first round. In the next round, the Bremen team faced SV Blau-Weiß Spandau and was eliminated from the tournament. The handball players last took part in the cup in 1997/98, where they narrowly defeated TSG Hatten-Sandkrug 23:24 in round 1, but lost to GWD Minden in round 2.

The handball division of the Bremen-Ost team never returned to the Regionalliga Nord and is currently in the Verbandsliga Nord, the sixth highest league in the country. The second team, as well as the women, are currently represented in the Regionalsoberliga.[11]

In the 2014/15 season, former handball professional Rolf Harjes was coach of the women’s second team.

The men’s soccer team of SG Bremen-Ost regularly takes part in the Bremen State Cup, but has never made it past the first round. The club was most successful in the 2018/19 season, when it narrowly lost 5:6 to SV Lemwerder in a high-scoring game. In other years, the team often left the tournament early. In its first participation in 2016/17, it suffered a clear 0:10 defeat against TSV Grolland. However, the SGBO suffered its heaviest defeat in the Bremen State Cup in the 2019/20 season at TuS Schwachhausen, when it lost 1:22. The most recent game in the 2024/25 season against FC Union 60 Bremen also ended in a double-digit defeat (0:13).[12] The SGBO’s first men’s team currently plays in the Kreisliga C, the lowest league in the state.[13]

In addition to the first men’s team, there are also over-50 and over-40 teams as well as junior teams in the club.

The men’s basketball team took part in the 2022/23 Regional League South Lüneburg, the third highest league in Bremen/Lower Saxony.[14]

In the 2023/24 season, SG Bremen-Ost won the Men’s West District League and was promoted to the sixth-tier Association League.[15]

Sports such as badminton, gymnastics, jiu jitsu, judo, karate, children’s gymnastics, Nordic walking, bumper ball, cycling, rehabilitation, swimming, dance sport, tennis, table tennis and volleyball are also offered at the Spielgemeinschaft Bremen-Ost eV.[16]
