The Giants announced this on Thursday afternoon President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey named Randy Winn as the team’s vice president of player development.
“We are excited to see Randy in this new role,” Posey said in a statement. “Randy is part of the rich history of baseball in the Bay Area and brings a deep knowledge and understanding of the game from his playing and post-playing careers. He has also been committed to the youth of our community through his work and leadership with the Giants Community Fund and we believe Randy is the right person to take our player development to the next level.”
Winn, 50, played for the Giants from 2005 to 2009 after being traded from the Seattle Mariners. In 666 career games with San Francisco, Winn had a .290 batting average and a .776 OPS while totaling 51 home runs and 73 steals.
After his 13-year playing career, Winn returned to the Giants in 2012. He was the team’s roving outfield and baserunning instructor from 2013 to 2016 and special assistant to the GM from 2017 to 2018. In 2019, Winn was a professional scout new general manager Zack Minasianwho was working as the head of professional scouting at the time. In addition to his work with the organization, Winn has covered the Giants as an analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area since 2013.
